Map Map – A Game About Maps is one of those experiences. It’s a small, colorful, quiet adventure that focuses on cartography, navigation and discovery of the environment.

The game is trying to create an adventurous and soothing feeling at its heart. It demands you to explore, observe, and slowly learn the world around you, not through constant action or heavy systems, but through the simple enjoyment of reading the land, making connections, and finding your own way forward.

The first thing that caught my attention at the start of my playthrough was the game’s colorful and lively atmosphere. The color palette is bright, happy and welcoming, letting the environments feel dynamic and playful despite their simplicity.

This art style fits in with the game’s laid-back tone. It creates the type of world that you just want to walk around in, take in the scenery, enjoy the little visual details scattered about the map. The early hours of Map Map were genuinely appealing to me due to that warm and uncomplicated feeling.

But what really got me was the map making and marking system. It was really fun to be able to mark exactly the points I wanted, whether that’s the location of a chest or a tiny visual clue on the ground.

The stickers and the ability to personalize the map made me feel like the map actually belonged to me. The more I explored, the less my map looked like a navigational tool and the more it looked like a colorful travel journal, a record of where I had been, what I had noticed, and what I still wanted to go back to later.

One of my favorite parts of the experience was also finding treasures. The game gives its clues in simple directions, “three steps north, two steps west.” That combination of reading location and moving in a direction put me in the mood to solve a classic adventure puzzle.

There was a very specific kind of satisfaction in reaching the right place and finally unveiling the treasure, the kind of satisfaction that older adventure games inspire, where discovery felt personal, purposeful and truly rewarding.

The environments and islands aren’t really complex in design, but it works with the simple and relaxing feel of the game. Each area is constructed from a familiar mix of sand, rocks, trees and narrow paths, and these basic elements help the player remember environmental landmarks as they explore.

In that sense, the environments are not trying to be visually overwhelming or have too much detail. They are, rather, a useful basis for navigation and map-making. This simplicity ensures that the player’s attention is exactly where it needs to be: reading directions, following clues, and marking important spots on the map.

The game is really relaxing in its atmosphere. The background music is calm and gentle, fitting the thoughtful pace of the game perfectly. It’s not too busy, not completely invisible. Just enough to settle your mind and help you focus on the paths, the clues and the map in front of you.

The sound design is one of the other good qualities of the game. One thing I noticed was the change in sounds depending on what you are walking on. For example, if you dig in sand it sounds one way, if you hit stone it sounds completely different. This kind of attention to small details makes the experience feel more natural, polished and carefully crafted.

But for all its strengths, the one problem with the game that is hard to ignore is that the experience gradually becomes repetitive.

The truth is, after an hour or two, I started to realize that the game was essentially asking me to do the same thing over and over: find a clue, walk around, mark the map, find a chest, and then move on to the next objective.

The core idea is charming, and building your own map feels personal, so this loop is enjoyable at first. But Map Map doesn’t do enough to meaningfully expand on what it already has or introduce new mechanics. What starts as a refreshing, relaxing adventure slowly starts to feel predictable. The minimal variety makes the game repetitive over time, slowly taking away your urge to continue playing. That happened to be what I was. Eventually the novelty and excitement wore off and the game lost the same allure as it did in the first few hours.

In addition to that problem, the game also has a fairly frustrating design flaw: limited visibility and no zoom option.

There were times that I wanted to mark a specific place on the map but the environment was crowded or there were rocks, trees and other objects surrounding the area so I could not clearly tell exactly where my character was standing. It lacks proper zoom in and zoom out, or at least some tool to give you a better view of exactly where the player is, which makes it more awkward than it should be.

This can lead to incorrect markings or to having to check the same spot multiple times just to be sure. The problem becomes even more apparent in the case of more precise goals or in the search for treasure. The restriction on visibility really kills the experience, especially for a game that is so dependent on good observation and map making. This seems like it could have been designed much better.

Overall, Map Map – A Game About Maps is an experience that will likely appeal most to younger players, or to those who appreciate calm, colorful games built around exploration. For that audience, it’s lively atmosphere and map customization system can be entertaining, even creatively engaging.

That said, even for those players some of the puzzles and navigation challenges can still feel a little difficult or confusing at times. On the other hand, those players looking for more mechanical variety or a more nuanced sense of gameplay progression may find that after a few hours the game starts to repeat its ideas too often and loses some of its initial freshness.

This review is based on the PC version

Score: 65/100

Every now and then a game comes along that might look small and simple on the surface but has an idea you can’t easily shrug off.
