After several experimental entries, Firefly Studios finally seems ready to answer that request. The Stronghold 4 Demo doesn’t attempt to show everything the final game has to offer. Instead, it offers a concentrated taste of the gameplay, letting players experience the two pillars that have always been the franchise’s defining features – building a prosperous medieval economy and commanding armies on the battlefield.

There are only two scenarios in the demo: one is about Economic gameplay, and the other is about Military combat. This doesn’t have a cinematic introduction or story campaign. In essence, this is a proof of concept, intended to showcase the game’s fundamental mechanics rather than its story goals. To be honest, that is to its advantage. While leaving plenty to learn in the full release, it allows players ample time to comprehend Firefly’s vision.

A Strong Return to Classic City Building

The Economic mission feels immediately familiar, in the best way. As soon as you start dropping in woodcutters, stockpiles and food production buildings, it’s obvious that Firefly isn’t trying to reinvent Stronghold’s identity.

The veterans will get the hang of it in no time. Building production chains, balancing resources, expanding settlement and keeping efficiency all feel very close to original games. The developers have taken the formula that made Stronghold such an addictive city-builder and made it better, rather than complicating things. That’s not to say that nothing has changed.

The Economy feels a little deeper than it used to, with different production chains requiring more steps to process than in older titles. These add a touch of planning without slowing the pace down, making the city building aspect feel more interesting while remaining accessible for returning players.

The interface has also been improved in meaningful ways. Easier to read information, cleaner menus and less unnecessary clicks to manage your castle. It brings the experience into the modern day without losing the simplicity that made past entries so great.

Honor Finally Returns

The most exciting feature in the demo is perhaps the return of the Honor system.

Hardcore fans will immediately recognize this mechanic from Stronghold Crusader and other classic entries. Honor becomes a significant component of progression once again, not an optional resource. And more interesting is how Firefly has grown its role. The game has received a new Rank progression system that allows players to earn their Rank status throughout missions. Your Honor increases as you increase your Rank, but that is only part of the reward.

The higher the rank, the newer buildings and building options you’ll unlock, giving you plenty of reason to keep levelling up.

It’s a nice progression system in that it always gives players something else to shoot for besides just gathering resources or beating enemies. On longer missions there’s always another milestone to work towards and that makes the gameplay loop more rewarding than previous installments.

The Rank system is integrated into the traditional Stronghold gameplay, rather than replacing it.

Classic Art Style Meets Unreal Engine 5

Visually, Stronghold 4 is surprisingly restrained. Firefly has instead opted to retain the familiar art style of the original games, while taking advantage of Unreal Engine 5 to improve the overall presentation, rather than trying for photorealism.

Buildings look just as you remember them in terms of proportions and mediaeval charm, and environments are more lit, with better textures, better shadows and far more environmental detail. It’s not a full visual overhaul, but it does feel like the Stronghold players remember, just via modern hardware. That is arguably one of the demo’s biggest achievements.

Performance Still Needs Optimization

Performance is another area where the demo shows that there is still plenty of work to do before launch. Stronghold 4 was surprisingly demanding on hardware. I was able to get a mostly playable frame rate during my time with the demo, but The CPU and GPU temps were way higher than I would expect from a strategy game and the system fans kicked on pretty much right away when loading into larger maps. Even on capable hardware the game tends to push the system more than its current level of visual complexity would suggest.

So many work to do in Combat

The Economic scenario is the best showpiece of the demo, while the Military mission is where the demo’s unfinished nature shows.

That’s the core mechanics, and big mediaeval battles still deliver the satisfying spectacle that Stronghold is expected to deliver. But there are a few technical failings that leap out immediately.

The most obvious problem is the enemy AI. Sometimes the enemy does strange and unpredictable things, makes odd tactical decisions or reacts oddly in battle. Sometimes units will hesitate, not position correctly, or behave in ways that pull you out of the experience. Whether this is due to unfinished artificial intelligence systems or simplified scripting made for the demo, it is hard to say, but either way, combat is not consistent enough to be considered a finished RTS at the moment.

Animations is another area that needs attention. Movement is a bit stiff and attack animations don’t feel that powerful, and the transition from one action to another isn’t always very smooth. None of these issues makes the game unplayable, but they certainly have the feeling that these assets were made for an early demo build rather than finished quality work. These are the kinds of things that developers usually adjust late in production, so fortunately you can afford to not worry about them for now.

Final Verdict

The Stronghold 4 Demo works because it knows exactly what it has to prove. There is no attempt to impress players with grand campaigns or flashy cinematic moments. Instead, it’s all about gameplay—and for the most part, that confidence pays off.

The Economic gameplay is fun from the get-go, the return of the Honor system feels like a real love letter to long-time fans, and the new Rank progression gives players meaningful long-term goals. But the Military section is still improvable. Enemy AI feels inconsistent and many animations lack the polish expected from a finished product. These are all things that keep the demo from reaching its full potential, but they’re also the types of problems that are easily fixable before launch.

If Firefly Studios can fine-tune the combat systems, refine AI behavior, and polish the remaining animations in the coming months, Stronghold 4 has all the ingredients to be not only the strongest modern entry in the franchise, but perhaps the best 3D Stronghold game the series has ever seen. “All that is needed now is to put the finishing touches to the castle’s foundations before opening its gates.”

This review is based on the PC version

Score: 80/100

For years, Stronghold fans have been asking for one thing: a true successor that captures the spirit of the classic games without simply recreating them.
