You team up, fight your way through levels, defeat towering bosses, and come away feeling rewarded for your teamwork. The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, however, has a very different goal—it wants to prove that friendship is far more fragile than you think. Spend just a few minutes wandering through its cursed jungles, and you’ll reach the point where you no longer trust yourself, let alone the three people who were fighting alongside you moments earlier. That simple but brilliantly executed premise defines the game’s entire identity, resulting in one of the most distinctive and psychologically unsettling co-op experiences to emerge in recent years.

The story follows a group of treasure hunters who journey deep into an uncharted jungle in search of a lost city. But soon it becomes clear that the greatest danger does not come from the hostile native tribes or the occasional monsters that lurk in the forest, but from something far subtler, something that is slowly creeping into their minds. The story is refreshingly simple and players are spared the usual Lovecraftian process of piecing together a lot of notes and contextual clues just to understand half of what’s going on. The story lacks the depth and staying power of the best of the genre, but it is clear that the creators were not really concerned with story. Their real purpose is to slowly erode your friends’ confidence in you.

Best part of the game is definitely the Sanity mechanic that is the basis for the whole experience. The longer you spend in lunacy-infected places the more your character’s sanity declines, and that’s when the game starts to change your perception. At first the effects are mild. You may see flashes of shadows that seem to disappear when you look at them. Or hear voices that are not really there. But almost immediately the hallucinations get a lot more disturbing. Your colleague might suddenly appear as a towering monster and persuade you to empty an entire magazine into what you think is a horrible creature. The most disturbing thing happens later, after the chaos has ended, you’re left wondering if your friend was ever in danger or if the game had been playing you all along. A tight system that constantly blurs the line between truth and delusion, paranoia being the most difficult enemy to fight.

This single mechanic turns the standard co-op formula on its head. Most cooperative games require communication, trust and teamwork to succeed. In The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu it’s precisely the opposite; the more you work together, the more you suspect each other. A few hours in the game and you’ll probably spend less time worrying about the horrors that lurk in the jungle and more time worrying about the friend that’s been unloading magazines into a random tree for the last five minutes while desperately insisting, “A monster just came out of there!” The worst part is that no one can tell them for sure that they’re wrong, because maybe they’re actually seeing something no one else can.

Even in the simplest of encounters the game is always looking for opportunities to split the team apart. Imagine this: You walk into a temple, it is totally dark and one of your friends panics and screams “Run! Everyone would automatically follow in a regular co-op game. Your first thought here is a lot more disturbing: What if they’re the only one who can see what they’re running from? These small hesitations build a kind of psychological tension you don’t normally find in multiplayer games, and they embody the paranoia so often associated with Lovecraft’s work. Instead of using monsters or jump scares, The Mound makes uncertainty the real monster, making you question the world around you, as well as the people fighting on your side.

The gameplay is much more about co-operation, resource management and survival than it is about fast paced firefights. There’s a fair selection of weapons, and each encounter will require delicate ammo management and clever decision making, but this isn’t a high octane shooter. In many cases, the best option is to avoid combat altogether. The enemies, however, have great visual designs, perfectly embodying the unsettling aesthetic of cosmic horror. But after a few hours, their behavior becomes repetitive and they lose the sense of surprise which makes the opening stages so effective.

The game has an excellent atmosphere and this is another great strength. Dense jungles, thick fog, poor illumination and unnerving sounds, whether real or not, all combine to create a constant sense of anxiety. What makes it even more impressive is that the game manages to maintain this tension even when there are no enemies around, because you never know for sure if what you’re seeing is actually there. It’s times like this when the artistic direction of the game becomes far more important than its technical fidelity, and it’s clear the developers knew exactly where their priorities needed to be.

That being said, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is not without its faults. After a while some missions begin to feel a bit repetitive, and the variety of objectives isn’t quite enough to maintain the same freshness you felt in the opening hours. The user interface can also become unnecessarily cluttered, sometimes showing vital information at the worst possible moments.

The Xbox Series S version does a reasonable job overall but does suffer from occasional frame-rate drops during more demanding scenes, along with delayed texture loading. None of these are game-breaking issues, but they’re noticeable enough that they can’t be ignored.

At the end of the day, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu might not be the best co-op game of the year, but it’s certainly one of the most unique. The trick is to let it show you its world and teach you the way its twisted rules work, after a few hours. If you want a fast paced action shooter, then this probably isn’t the game for you. But if you can find a few friends to spend a couple of hours doubting each other, killing each other by accident, and still arguing about who was really at fault once it’s all over, then The Mound is an experience not to be missed.

Just don’t beat yourself up if one of your friends never invites you to play again once the credits roll.
