But here we are. A game that used to have massive frame-rate issues and occasional unpleasant stutters, even on the PlayStation 5 and powerful gaming PCs, is now so smooth and constant on the Nintendo Switch 2 that it almost seems like it was made for handheld play all along.

Capcom has once again shown it can deliver challenging games on Nintendo technology that people are willing to look past some drawbacks just to experience on the go. This is, in many respects, a masterclass in optimization and porting that the whole video game business could benefit from.

The story begins under the worst conditions; you are a slave, forced to work at a dig site with no memory of your past or who you used to be. Then a terrible Medusa attacks, a horrible creature with snakes for hair who can turn her victims to stone. You get a chance to escape. The encounter also triggers a terrible flashback: a dragon pulling your heart out of your chest and making you the Arisen, a chosen one who is to chase down the very beast that took their heart.

When you arrive at the capital of Vermund you find that a false Arisen has usurped the throne. The following is a trip through the political schemes of Vermund and the inhospitable deserts of Battahl as you struggle to recover your identity and rightful place in the kingdom.

But that is merely the beginning. When you add the Dark Arisen addition, the adventure takes you to the icy, barren plains of Norgan where you team up with a new ally named Eara to hunt down a fallen dragon that just won’t stay down. On your journey, you will encounter the Lost Rites, a series of 12 terrible dungeons that challenge your skills and determination to the extremes.

Quests in Dragon’s Dogma won’t wait around for you. If you take too long to rescue a hostage under attack by wolves, you might arrive only to discover their lifeless body. This sense of consequence extends into a combat system that blends pure action with the inventive mechanics associated with Capcom’s Monster Hunter series.

Combat is way more than just pushing a button and seeing an attack animation play out. You can climb up the leg of a towering Cyclops, make your way to its head, and strike your sword right into its eye. Alternatively, you can grab minor adversaries and toss them into a nearby river.

The game’s Vocation system is impressively diverse, including archetypes like the Fighter and the Archer, as well as sophisticated choices like the Mystic Spearhand and Sorcerer, which give unique takes on magic and melee combat. As you advance in each Vocation, you gain access to more abilities and passive buffs. Some of them can be transferred to other classes, so you can try new builds and playstyles.

One big disappointment in the Nintendo Switch 2 is the lack of gyro aiming. Its absence is notably obvious while playing as an Archer, meaning that ranged combat feels a bit less natural and responsive than it could have been.

Dragon’s Dogma is a single player game, yet it never really feels like a solo adventure thanks to its incredible Pawn system. You construct your own Main Pawn, a faithful friend who will accompany you on your adventure, plus two more Pawns made by gamers around the world.

What’s impressive about these AI-driven partners is that they may draw on experiences from other players’ environments. If a Pawn has uncovered a secret chest before, or knows the solution to a certain mission, they can give you hints on the fly as you play, leading you to secrets or assisting you to finish an unfamiliar task.

These interactions make your associates feel more than just regular AI followers. And if their continuous ideas or commentary are bothersome, you can just tell them to stop, giving you more choice over how much help you get on your vacation.

In handheld mode, the internal resolution can drop as low as 360p at times, giving a hazy and significantly muddy image. But the sheer feat of running such a vast open world in the palm of your hands rapidly makes these graphic concessions easier to forgive. The experience is further heightened by the accuracy of HD Rumble 2, which offers impressively realistic haptic input, even letting you feel the faint touch of footsteps via the controllers.

This $50 package offers the potential for hundreds of hours of compelling gameplay with the addition of the Dark Arisen content, the loot appraisal system, and, most importantly, the Eternal Ferrystone, which completely eliminates the original game’s frustrating and expensive fast-travel limitations.

The one really upsetting choice is about physical collectors. The game is packaged in a retail case but without a cartridge, only a download code that requires users to download around 58GB of data.

Dark Arisen’s Performance on Nintendo Switch 2 shows that ambition doesn’t have to be held back by technology restrictions. With the correct optimization, even the most demanding experiences can find a new home on portable hardware.

Final Verdict

Ultimately, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen for Nintendo Switch 2 is more than just conversion; it’s a technological statement from Capcom. There’s significant pop-in and sacrifices on distant ambient detail, but the fundamental gameplay, epic combat engagements and dynamic open-world elements are astonishingly intact.

This version shows how a solid knowledge of the RE Engine can make a game that formerly pushed powerful home consoles to their limits a surprisingly seamless experience on hybrid technology.

With its initial flaws fixed and a tons of content packed in, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is one of the most enticing and must-have action RPGs out there for the Nintendo Switch 2.

This review is based on the Nintendo Switch 2 version

Score: 80/100

When a game as technically demanding and ambitious as Dragon’s Dogma 2 was initially revealed, even the most hopeful critics could barely fathom such a mammoth running comfortably on a handheld system.
