Playing Well Dweller feels just like turning the old pages of One Thousand and One Nights, where the story is tied to a mysterious fear and a dark fate. Without using difficult words or an overly crowded plot, the game chooses a simple, dark, and mysterious tone for its storytelling. This style successfully keeps your curiosity alive to uncover the secrets of a ruined kingdom.

However, we need to see whether such a strange fantasy world can offer fun, standard Metroidvania gameplay beyond its pretty looks during this relatively short journey.

Story and Narrative: Ancient Tales on Ruined Walls

Protagonist has simple motivation; go into dark world to rescue family members from evil queen. Unlike a game like Blasphemous, which buries its narrative in heavy religious metaphors and complex dialogue, Well Dweller uses simple visual storytelling that keeps the pace of exploration flowing.

Sometimes, when you meet a new character, the game shows the conversation in painted frames that look like an illustrated storybook. Words appear on the screen with soft, pleasant sound effects, recreating the feeling of reading an old fairy tale. In addition to these direct encounters, torn pages with snippets of lore are scattered around the map. A jigsaw puzzle is how I’ve gathered these notes, which ultimately form a whole book about the past and the secret stories of this country.

In the meantime, the game world itself is speaking, not with words but with its existence. The developers let the environment tell most of the story as you explore different biomes. Skeletons of men, shattered shrines, ruins of a fallen kingdom show the weight of the tragedy. No line of text is needed. This dark environmental storytelling, along with written clues, encourages the player to look beyond saving the family and understand why this mysterious world has collapsed.

World Building and Atmosphere: A Visual Balance Between Mild Horror and Fantasy

The game’s biggest visual strength is striking a fine balance between two opposite feelings: a dark, mysterious world and cute, charming characters. This juxtaposition brings to mind the likes of the popular games Ori and the Blind Forest and Hollow Knight. The color palette of each area corresponds to its nature, and the developers paid great attention to the enemy’s design. For example, enemies in the docks biome are fish and sea creatures, so they blend in with the environment.

Exploration here is tightly interwoven with movement upgrades, and is more than just running and jumping. Many areas have a rhythm of movement, interspersed with environmental puzzles. The other example would be the bell mechanic. You hit a bell and it will show platforms for a short time, so you have to jump at the right times and do some active platforming. Aside from these creative ideas, the map design has one small issue: having an easy fast travel system early on and mostly straightforward main paths makes finding secret doors and shortcuts, which are core elements of classic series like Metroid and Castlevania, feel less rewarding and less important for progressing through the map.

The Matchstick Mechanic, Platforming, and Exploration: Dancing with the Flame to Survive

The most creative gameplay idea is to combine several core mechanics into one matchstick. This is the matchstick that is your health bar, your weapon, and your jumping tool. The flame will grow weaker every time you get hit by an enemy or hazard. If the flame goes out, you die.” The healing mechanic is kind of like the Focus system in Hollow Knight, but in this game, healing requires good timing in tense moments and successful execution gives you a temporary boost to your attack power.

Along the way you unlock various skills, such as using a catapult to throw matchsticks at walls, or scaling steep rocks. These skills, along with the ability to buy hints to find items and place custom markers on the map, make backtracking feel very smooth. Having rest tents right outside boss rooms and being able to quick travel between them also takes away the painful, long boss runbacks you know from titles like Hollow Knight, saving players a lot of time.

Combat and Boss Fights: Great Ideas in Simple Encounters

Combat is not the focus here, clearly, living in the shadow of platforming and puzzle solving. The whole adventure doesn’t change or give your main weapon alternative forms, like in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, where the varied combos and gear are a big part of the fun. Regular enemies on the map are more like mobile platforming obstacles than foes that you have to parry or learn intricate attack patterns from. But for the hardcore fans looking for tough fights, this simple setup might seem a little shallow.

The real fun begins when you enter boss arenas. Instead of giving every boss big health bars, the team came up with unique scenarios and mechanical gimmicks for each boss. The encounters are lively and full of surprises: one battle requires you to hide behind obstacles like a game of hide and seek to survive, another turns into a fast chase where you have to hit the boss while running away.

With all that variety, the game’s upgrade balance makes the challenge insufficiently low. The game is very generous with trinket slots, akin to the Charm system in Hollow Knight. They usually have powerful effects such as greatly reducing damage taken or greatly increasing your attack power, so the difficulty is usually pretty low. These buffs stack so well that experienced players can easily kill most of the fun bosses in a first try without learning attack patterns.

Sound Design and Technical Performance: Clean and Detailed Execution

The sound design is packed with cute little details that bring the world to life. Sound effects for hitting enemies, interacting with the environment and bouncing on bubbles add to the light and playful fantasy atmosphere. The music fits the dark and mysterious atmosphere well, but on the soundtrack there isn’t enough of a variety of tracks for such large biomes. The looping background music can get a little repetitive during long sessions of exploration and that’s something that’s really noticeable when compared to the rich soundtracks of games such as Blasphemous or Hollow Knight.

The game runs well on PC and is stable and reliable. The frame rate is locked at a solid 60fps, and doesn’t dip even during fast platforming sections with tons of flying projectiles. There were no noticeable bugs, physical glitches or sudden crashes during the entire review period.

Final Verdict

Well Dweller’s short 10 to 15-hour length is a great choice for players who tend to shy away from Metroidvanias because of the punishing difficulty of games like Hollow Knight or Blasphemous. The developers decided to drop the stressful combat and over-complicated systems for a streamlined space that focuses on fun platforming, exploration and enjoying a classic fairy tale. The simple combat won’t be enough for the hardcore players who want a real challenge, but the game leaves a warm, fresh and memorable impression with clever boss fights, a lovely world and balanced movement puzzles.
