But can Capcom’s critically acclaimed survival horror classic deliver that same level of excellence on the Nintendo Switch 2, or does the transition to Nintendo’s hybrid console come at the cost of some of its magic?
Let’s start with the question that probably brought you to this review in the first place: how does Resident Evil 4 Remake actually look on the Nintendo Switch 2?
This isn’t the definitive version of Capcom’s acclaimed remake visually, but the results are still impressive. The Switch 2 version is somewhere between the PS4 and PS5 versions visually. The resolution and overall visual detail don’t quite match the current generation version but the newer hardware from Nintendo does allow for sharper and more detailed textures than the PS4. The result is a presentation that may not quite match the visual splendor of the PS5 release, but nonetheless represents a noticeable improvement over the previous-generation experience.

However, the biggest advantage the Switch 2 version has over the PlayStation 4 release is that it can run at 60 frames per second. That translates into a noticeably smoother and more responsive experience on Nintendo’s new hybrid console, with relatively minor frame-rate drops even during some of the game’s more demanding sequences.
Unfortunately, there are some major compromises to get to this level of performance. The most obvious one is the surprisingly low resolution. It can look especially rough when you are holding the device. The picture can indeed look noticeably softer than even some seventh-generation titles. There are some visual artefacts and aliasing that are hard to overlook, especially around small details like Leon’s hair, tree branches and the edges of environmental objects. These flaws are most noticeable on the Switch 2’s integrated screen, where the lack of image clarity can sometimes ruin an otherwise impressively smooth experience.

DLSS upscaling is a nice touch to improve image quality when you the dock the console. The improved visual clarity addresses many of the resolution issues that plague handheld mode, resulting in a much crisper and more satisfying experience. But players will encounter more graphical compromises than just resolution.
Capcom has made a number of compromises to keep things running smoothly, knowing the Switch 2 is less powerful than current-gen home consoles. Some environmental details have been toned down or removed entirely. Leon’s shadow will disappear in some specific areas at times. The overall density of visual detail is also dialed down, meaning some of the finer touches seen on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are either markedly reduced or missing entirely.
But considering the compromises, the docked mode results are surprisingly impressive. If you ignore the ray tracing, Resident Evil 4 Remake with good DLSS upscaling can nearly match the texture quality and lighting you get on the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. It may not be a perfect visual match to those consoles, but the Switch 2 version still succeeds in convincingly approximating the current generation experience, especially when played on a television.
Resident Evil 4 Remake on Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t the most visually impressive version of the game. But arguably it’s the best handheld experience you’re going to get across its many platforms. More importantly, graphical fidelity was never the defining characteristic of this remarkable remake.

What makes Resident Evil 4 really special is that it can blend relentless action with real tension, creating one of the most polished and technically adept third-person combat experiences of the last few years. The remake is spectacular, chaotic and constantly unpredictable, just like the original, rarely giving players a moment to catch their breath.
But what really puts the remake above its legendary predecessor though is the much higher level of interaction between Leon and his enemies. Combat is no longer a rigid back-and-forth of you attacking and your opponents attacking with little chance to defend in between. The parrying mechanic in particular changes the pace of encounters fundamentally. It allows you to respond directly to incoming attacks, and keeps you engaged even when on the defensive.
This adds a new layer of dynamism and immersion to close-quarters combat, making every encounter a tense, unpredictable standoff where timing and quick reflexes are as important as accurate shooting. And the parry system is but one of many thoughtful improvements that make Resident Evil 4 Remake such an exceptional update to a beloved classic.

The remake also drastically alters the way players approach encounters and move around its environments. Leon has a lot more to work with, from stealth mechanics to crouching and dodging incoming projectiles. These improvements are matched by a great level design, that balances the modern and the faithful to the original, masterfully. The familiar places and events have been meticulously re-imagined, without losing the qualities that made them memorable in the first place. What you end up with is something fantastically polished, consistently engaging and above all else, thoroughly entertaining.

Maybe the real let-down with the Nintendo Switch 2 version is the lack of unique hardware features of the console. Some of those features might only appeal to a minority of players, but adding mechanics specifically built for the unique technology of the Switch 2 could have brought another layer of novelty to an already familiar adventure. “It’s a missed opportunity to not give this specific version a stronger identity beyond portability.
The good news for Switch 2 owners is that they have reason to be excited, as this version includes the full experience, with the Separate Ways expansion included with the main game at no extra cost. That’s a nice addition and one that makes the package even more appealing, especially for players out there looking to get the most out of Resident Evil 4 Remake without having to go out and buy something else.

Final Verdict
Resident Evil 4 Remake delivers an exceptional survival horror experience on Nintendo Switch 2, combining thrilling combat, masterful level design, and impressive performance in a portable package.
