I have been waiting for Hollow Knight Silksong for what feels like an eternity. Now I got to play its demo at Gamescom, which was one of the best gaming events after Covid. While a 20-minute gameplay is not that long, it showcased some intriguing moments and key elements that I would like to share.
At first, you enter a region named Moss Grotto; The atmosphere and the color palette take you straight back to the unique world of Hollow Knight. After a few action scenes and some entertaining platforming, you finally make your way to the first Boss Fight. A giant bee appeared, but it offered little challenge and was quickly defeated. Everything up to this point was pure Hollow Knight, but only now I was playing with the game’s new hero: Hornet.

After that part, I headed into another area called the Deep Docks. Just like the first game, the map’s complexity, especially without having an actual map, had me completely lost trying to find the right path. What really grabbed my attention here was the enemy combat. Honestly, the enemies in Silksong can feel tougher than in the original game, and you are in for a ride.
The biggest difference in combat is Hornet’s ability to throw an item called the Kunai. It might sound like a small thing, but it makes fights feel way more empowering. The environments and enemies, much like Hollow Knight, instantly win you over. The devs are just brilliant at designing adorable yet dangerous creatures. I won’t spoil anything, but trust me, you’ll probably end up laughing at their goofy looks while you’re fighting them.

Even though I was running around the maze like map without a proper map, I still enjoyed exploring the world more than combat. Putting my personal taste aside, I noticed two new features in Silksong: First, Hornet is much more powerful than the previous hero so it makes combat more exciting than the original. Second, the enemies have evolved, and they are smarter and tougher now.
After such a long wait, I’m simply glad that we will finally get our hands on this game, and I hope you feel the same joy on September 4th.
